Chapter 13

After what felt like hours riding on Grim’s back, we arrived in a quiet spot somewhere I was sure no humans had been for a long, long time. If ever. We were miles away from any trails, and the area felt serene somehow. It was a clearing, no larger than a suburban backyard, surrounding a small cave worn into the side of a rock face. Moss and mushrooms grew all around, and the dampness from the rain made everything sparkle in the moonlight overhead. Grim lowered his front half again, inviting me to step off of him, then immediately shook out his fur like a dog, spraying water all around us before transforming back into a human. He used his hands to cover his nude self and walked sideways into the cave, so I didn’t get a glimpse of his naked backside. When he emerged from the cave back into the clearing, he was wearing a pair of what looked like swim trunks.

My vision had calmed just a little. What was once a rage of light, color, and heightened senses was now a dull glimmer in my peripherals. I stood there like a mannequin, unsure of what we were doing here or what I was supposed to do. For several moments, Grim and I stood and stared at each other, awkwardly waiting for the other to speak first. I ran my fingers through my wet hair, doing my best to untangle it but mostly looking for something to do with my hands.

“Would you like to come in?” Grim asked, gesturing to the cave entrance. “It’s not much, but it’s home.” He smirked, exposing one of the elongated canines in his human jaw. Instead of scary, it was oddly charming.

My eyes stared at his face—angular, cunning, with a square jaw featuring a spackling of facial hair. His eyes were those of a predator, with a twinkle of warmth alluding to his perhaps not entirely bloodthirsty nature. Moving down his form, I couldn’t help but stall at his chest and abs. He was built like a lumberjack and covered in scars. My heart fluttered at his appearance despite the red flags waving in my mind. If my vague plan to win over these creatures included warming up to his carved figure, I would enjoy that more than I was ready to admit.

“Why would I go in there?” I asked, prying to learn his intentions.

“Um, one, it’s dry,” he said, counting on his fingers. “Two, I have dry clothes in there. Three, I imagine you’re tired.”

“Four, you can kill me and keep me for yourself?” I spat, remembering that despite how painfully attractive he was, he’d still had a hand in my aforementioned uncomfortable, wet, and tired state.

Grim gave me a confused look. “Did I, or did I not, just save your life on the log bridge?”

“The log bridge that you made?” I shot back, unwilling to let this man fully gaslight me into thinking he was the good guy.

“Well… yeah,” he responded, shaking his head.
